My family are unapologetic beach snobs. We’ve been fortunate to visit some of the most iconic beach destinations around the world. So, when we heard about Assinie-Mafia Beach in Côte d’Ivoire, we assumed it would be the best beach in the country — but probably not world-class. We were wrong. Very wrong.

We were encouraged to skip the private resorts and head straight for the public beach — and what a decision that was. Public beaches are where the soul of a place reveals itself. It’s where you meet everyone, from every walk of life. That’s exactly what happened.

To get to the public beach, you take a small boat across the lagoon — a fun start to a day that only got better. We set up at one of the beachfront restaurants, where the local coconut vendor quickly handed us fresh coconuts to sip under the sun. We settled in to relax, and that’s when the magic really began.

Our kids, football lovers through and through, were soon playing in one of the most spontaneous, joyful pickup games of their lives. Everyone joined — the coconut guy, the jetski operator, even the local muscle man with his chiseled twelve-pack. No barriers, just barefoot football in paradise.

The views? Breathtaking. The water? Clear and inviting. The locals? Warm, welcoming, and full of life. And for our kids, it was that football game that sealed the memory of Assinie as one of their favorite places in the world.
